SWEDEN DAY AT TSINGHUA UNIVERSITY 2009

Sweden Day is an event to be held in Beijing at Tsinghua Univercity on the 7th of June, with the aim to stimulate interest in Sweden as a country, and swedish companies as potential workplace. The target groups for Sweden Day 2009 are students in different fields and levels of upper education. Project China 2009 and Tsinghua University will also work closely with other universities in Beijing to ensure that students from many different schools have the opportunity to learn more about Sweden and meet with Swedish companies. During Sweden Day there will be a series of lectures, exhibitions and a business forum to create interest in living, studying and working in Sweden.

Sweden day was also conducted last year in Beijing and was highly appreciated by students.

The vision for Sweden Day 09

Sweden Day will be divided into three parts consisting of two exhibitions called ”What is Sweden?”, ”Study in Sweden” and a third part which is a business forum where Chinese students can meet with Swedish companies.

What is Sweden

Sweden is a small country in northern Europe, far away from China and Chinese culture. With this exhibition Project China wants to introduce the country of Sweden through various different activities. We will introduce Swedish curiosities and culture as well as traditions such as Midsummer, Valborg and Crayfish parties.

Study in Sweden

Sweden is a very interesting country and has lots to offer. Education is also of high international standard and many courses in the universities are offered in English . We hope to stimulate an interest among Chinese students for making an exchange year, join a master programme or coming to Sweden as a researcher.

Business forum

The business forum is for Chinese students to get in contact with Swedish companies. This forum creates the opportunity for Chinese students to directly interact with Swedish companies and get to know what it is like to work in a Swedish company.

Sweden & China

Politics

Sweden recognized the People's Republic of China on 14th January 1950 and was the first western country to establish diplomatic relations with China. During the 1950s, Sweden supported consistently the restoration of China's legitimate seat in the UN.

Trade

Sweden is a vital partner to Chinese trade and Chinese companies. In 2004, 607 investment projects were concluded, with contracted investment reaching 10 billion RMB. Sweden has set up about 200 joint-ventures and solely owned companies in China.

Cultural

Since 1983 Sweden and China have had numerous cultural exchange programs with great value to both countries. In 2004 the swedish ship Götheborg, a replication of a 18th-century East Indiaman freighter, came to Hong Kong and Shanghai to acknowledge the trade and cultural exchange of the 18th-century between China.

Scientific

Scientific and technological exchanges between the two countries began in the 1970s. The bilateral scientific and technological cooperation has now been expanded to over 80 programs covering 20 fields such as communication, environmental protection, pharmaceutics, agriculture, forestry and space navigation. Since 1980 the Swedish side has trained about 2000 technicians and managers for China.

Academic

Sweden and China have exchanged students since 1964 and now over 800 Chinese exchange students enjoy our tuitionfree universities every year. Chinese students was the most common nationality except from Swedes in post-grad studies in 2001.
